Sławomir Sierakowski is the leader of Krytyka Polityczna (Political Critique), based in Poland with branches in Ukraine and Russia. It is the largest movement of left-wing intellectuals, artists, and activists in Eastern Europe. He is also director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Warsaw. The publication of his open letter “Time for the Neo-Dissidents?” (in “Gazeta Wyborcza” and recently in Dissent) sparked months of debates on the current state of democracies that included such voices as Zygmunt Bauman and the former president of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

Marci Shore teaches intellectual history at Yale University. She is the author of Caviar and Ashes: A Warsaw Generation’s Life and Death in Marxism, 1918-1968, discussing Eastern European intellectual, cultural and political life in the context of Marxism. Her current book, The Taste of Ashes, focuses on the presence of the Communist and Nazi past in the present Eastern Europe.
