[EVENT | February 28] Socialism in the City: Issue Launch
A discussion between Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, Nikhil Pal Singh, and Chris Maisano.
Join Dissent at Threes Brewing (333 Douglass Street in Brooklyn) on Saturday, February 28 at 2 p.m. for a discussion on our winter issue, Socialism in the City, with Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, Nikhil Pal Singh, and Chris Maisano.
In the issue, Abrahamian examines the challenges of implementing a universal child-care program in New York City. Maisano looks at the Zohran Mamdani campaign’s efforts to build and mobilize a “Rainbow Coalition for the twenty-first century.” And Singh writes about the meaning of Mamdani’s victory for the left, and what it will take to maintain hope in the political project he represents. They will discuss their articles and new developments in the two months since Mamdani’s inauguration.
Atossa Araxia Abrahamian is a journalist in New York and a contributing editor to Dissent magazine. She has written about child care for New York Magazine and Dissent.
Chris Maisano is the Editor of New Labor Forum, a contributor to Dissent, Jacobin, and other publications, and a veteran activist. He lives in Brooklyn, where he and his wife have paid a small fortune in child-care costs in addition to rent that is too high.
Nikhil Pal Singh is a professor of social and cultural analysis and history at New York University. He is currently working on a book on the twilight of America’s liberal empire.
Inspired by the special section, we want this event to be accessible to as many Dissent readers and families as possible. Free child care will be available during the discussion for children under the age of 7.
This event is co-sponsored by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung.
