The Indochina War was, no doubt, one of the great errors of French policy in this century. That is why the question of responsibility for this costly and futile venture will agitate all students of contemporary history for a long time to come. Why did the French lack the insight, possessed by the British and acquired slowly also by the Dutch, that the age of Western domination of Asia was coming to an end?
