The plight of democratic India has aroused little compassion in America. If it is accurate to say that the Administration has handled the Indian crisis admirably—not too much pressure on the Nehru government, no moralizing, a restrained effort to create a favorable climate for India-Pakistan negotiations — it must also be acknowledged that the American people remain cool and complacent over the issue.
