The prevailing pattern of family life among Negro people is the conjugal unit or the nuclear household consisting of husband, wife, and children. Both spouses are present in nearly 70 percent of all Negro families.

Most Negro households are supported by the work of a man. More than 90 percent of adult black men who are in the labor force are employed.
