W hen I was small I lived in Ottawa. My father worked for the Canadian government. And I suppose that is what Ottawa evokes for the foreign reader. It is Canberra or Kuala Lumpur, Commonwealth Capital, with parliamentary politics and green grass, with the real life of the country, the lively and identifying life, lived elsewhere. In Montreal cafes, perhaps, or in the bush, the Arctic.
But it happens that Ottawa was a good place for growing up to awareness of the French-English conflict...
