A few observations on the discussion of pornography in your Spring 1978 issue (“The Problem of Pornography,” by Murray Hausknecht, with comments by Lionel Abel, George P. Elliott, Cynthia Fuchs Epstein, Irving Howe, and David Spitz). With regard to David Spitz’s piece, surely Milton must be gyrating in his grave. It should be noted that the Areopagitica is concerned with religious differences only. It has nothing to do with the defense of erotic or pornographic materials, an indication that not all periods find the sexual as fascinating—or problematic—as ours does.

Would Milton advocate the censorship of pornographic materials if he were alive today? It is entirely probable. After his...
