[EVENT] Hazem Kandil on the Egyptian Revolution and Its Aftermath
In the Summer 2012 issue of Dissent, Hazem Kandil presented his analysis of Egypt’s recent revolution. This Wednesday he will be in New York to discuss his new book, Soldiers, Spies, and Statesmen, now out from Verso.

The event will provide a unique opportunity to discuss unfolding events in Egypt with the author of what Michael Mann has called “a brilliant revisionist account of the origins of the Egyptian Revolution.”
Hazem Kandil presents the revolution as the latest episode in an ongoing power struggle between the three components of Egypt’s authoritarian regime: the military, the security services, and the political apparatus. A detailed study of the interactions within this invidious triangle over six decades of war, conspiracy, and sociopolitical transformation, Soldiers, Spies, and Statesmen is the first systematic analysis of how Egypt metamorphosed from a military into a police state—and what that means for the future of its revolution.
